Rain Jackets for Small Dogs

black pug in yellow raincoat

We get a fair amount of rain here in Northeast Texas. If I’m spending time outside in the rain, I’m using my umbrella or have my waterproof coat on. I mean, who wants to be soaking wet? Not me and probably not my dogs; it’s chilly and uncomfortable and my dogs seem to think the best place to shake off water is in the kitchen all over the cabinets and floor. Rain jackets for small dogs are perfect for keeping your furry friend dry in those Spring and Summer rains. They protect your dog from the elements but are lightweight enough to be worn in warmer weather. I’ve put together a list of THE best rain jackets for small dogs based on personal experience, recommendations from family and friends, TONS of research and product reviews. I know you and your furry family will be happy with any of these choices! If you are looking for a waterproof coat for cold temps, please see my review of Waterproof Coats for Small Dogs. 1. Dogopal Dog Raincoat

Key Features

  • Waterproof nylon shell with mesh liner
  • Loosely slips over pet’s head and secures with adjustable elastic drawstring and zipper at neck and adjustable buckle around belly
  • Moderate to full belly coverage
  • Reflective stripes
  • Adjustable elastic leg straps
  • Leash hole
  • Minimum chest girth 16″
  • Coat weight 4.37 oz (S)

This raincoat is lightweight and affordable. There’s not much to the material, which is great if you just need something for a warm summer rain (if it is cold, you’ll want your pup to wear something warm underneath). I ordered the small yellow even though the sizing chart states minimum chest girth is 16″ (my Poodle is 14″) because some reviewers commented that this raincoat runs small. It is so cute, I took my chances hoping it would fit. Well it doesn’t, so for at least the small I’d say their sizing chart is spot on. If your little guy is a bigger than mine, I think you’ll be very happy with this raincoat. Passed my (un)scientific waterproof test and this time I purposely included lots of stitching. Raincoat still remained dry inside even at the seams. This coat provides lots of belly coverage, while remaining out of the pee zone. The leg straps are adjustable which is nice, most are not in my experience. Lots of extras like the reinforced leash hole for such an affordable jacket. My favorite thing about this raincoat is how highly visible it is. Your dog will be like a beacon, there is no way you can miss him.

2. Ruffwear Sun Shower Dog Raincoat

Key Features

  • Lightweight waterproof nylon shell with high collar
  • Slips over pet’s head and fastens at belly with adjustable buckles
  • Minimal belly coverage
  • Leash hole
  • Elastic leg straps
  • Reflective accents
  • Minimum chest girth 13″
  • Coat weight 2.4 oz (XXS)

As far as rain jackets for small dogs go, this gets high marks for truly being waterproof. It stays in place and offers a lightweight solution for rainy walks. Some reviewers have commented on sizing discrepancies and difficulty fastening buckles because they are tucked up into material.

3. Kooltail Dog Raincoat Hooded with Reflective Strip

Key Features

  • Waterproof poncho style
  • Slips over pet’s head and secures with adjustable elastic drawstring at neck and Velcro around belly
  • Moderate belly coverage
  • Reflective stripes
  • Leash hole
  • Minimum chest girth 17.4″ and neck girth 12″
  • Coat weight 2.39 oz

Kooltail makes a whole line of dog products from clothing to puzzle toys. This raincoat is cute, lightweight, and your little one looks like a sophisticated Sherlock Holmes. Not sure I’d trust its ability to keep my pups dry on long walks, but for quick trips out to pee it works. The majority of negative comments mentioned the sizing discrepancies, many stating this raincoat runs large, while others had issues with this raincoat’s waterproof capabilities.

4. Cosibell Waterproof Dog Raincoat

Key Features

  • Lightweight waterproof polyester shell with detachable zippered hood
  • Fastens around pet with Velcro at neck and adjustable buckle strap around belly
  • Moderate belly coverage
  • Carrying pouch included
  • Leash hole
  • Elastic leg straps
  • Reflective material strips
  • Minimum chest girth 13.5″
  • Coat weight 5.6 oz (XS)

I like the idea of a detachable hood, so many times the hood is too big and I end up folding it back so my Poodles can see. Also, the raincoat sides can be tucked under the belt, this allows for more belly coverage and a drier pet. The main issue is sizing inconsistency; some stated the raincoat was too big, while others commented it was too small.

5. Morezi Double Layer Zip Rain Jacket

Key Features

  • Waterproof with detachable snap hood
  • Slip one leg in then jacket goes around pet to fasten with zipper and snaps in front
  • Maximum belly coverage
  • Adjustable drawstring hood
  • Adjustable drawstring on tail end of jacket
  • Usable pockets
  • Reflective buttons
  • Harness hole
  • Multiple cute colors
  • Soft cotton lining
  • Minimum chest girth 15″
  • Jacket weight 4.5 oz

This jacket is highly rated, many commenting on the quality and how warm it kept their pet. It’s cute and has lots of extras like usable pockets. Negative comments centered on sizing discrepancies some stating this jacket runs small while others stated it was too big. The arms of the jacket may be a little too long for shorter pups, and rolling up the sleeves kind of defeats the purpose of waterproof since the inside liner is not waterproof. I like the how drawstring cinches up around their butt to keep lower body dry.

6. HDE Reversible Dog Raincoat

Key Features

  • Lightweight waterproof nylon poncho with hood
  • Fastens around pet with Velcro at neck and around belly
  • Minimal belly coverage
  • Reflective piping
  • Leash hole
  • Cute patterns and colors
  • Carrying pouch built in
  • Minimum chest girth 14″
  • Coat weight 3.41 oz (S)

HDE makes several raincoats that have gotten good reviews. They are affordable and offer a nice layer of protection from the rain. Most negative comments stated the raincoat runs small.

7. RC Pet Products Packable Dog Rain Poncho

Key Features

  • Lightweight waterproof polyester shell with hood
  • Fastens around pet with snaps at neck and Velcro around belly
  • Minimal belly coverage
  • Leash hole
  • Cute patterns and colors
  • Carrying pouch included
  • Minimum chest girth 12″
  • Poncho weight 0.8 oz (XS)

RC Pet Products have been featured in many of my reviews. I have several of their dog products and like this company and the quality of their dog dog apparel. This no frills poncho is cute and convenient and affordable. It’s easy to put on for a quick walk in yard to pee or poop when its raining. My Poodles actually prefer no elastic leg straps and with this poncho that doesn’t pose a problem (like poncho sliding off of flipping up exposing their backs to rain when they bend down to sniff) like some coats which are more rigid. That being said, if it’s windy the poncho may not stay in place on pet’s lower back so, if you prefer leg straps, you may want to check out one of the other raincoats featured here.

8. Canada Pooch Torrential Tracker Dog Rain Jacket

Key Features

  • Waterproof with snap-back hood
  • Step-in style and fastens with Velcro down the front
  • Full belly coverage
  • Functional pockets
  • Reflective trim
  • Leash hole
  • Minimum chest girth 17.4″ and neck girth 12″
  • Jacket weight 4.2 oz

Canada Pooch is another highly recommended company and has been making quality dog products for years. These rain jackets for small dogs have a cotton lining but for colder days you may want to layer. Complaints were mostly about sizing discrepancies, but this jacket does come in multiple sizes increasing your chances of finding the perfect fit.

9. RC Pet Products Venture Shell Reflective Coat

Key Features

  • Water repellent
  • Fastens around pet at neck and belly with Velcro
  • High collar
  • Full belly coverage
  • Leash hole
  • Multiple color choices
  • Reflective print
  • Minimum chest girth 14″
  • Coat weight 1.48 oz (8)

RC Pet Products have been featured in many of my reviews. I have several of their dog products and like this company and the quality of their dog apparel, so I decided to try this shell. It is light and convenient. It’s easy to put on and take off my dog and the print is highly reflective. The Velcro works really well, but the neck Velcro is right next to his ear and it’s loud so to avoid scaring him, I slip this portion over his head. I bought the size 8 for my Toy, Fred because his chest girth is 14″. I should gone by length rather than girth because the coat fits around him perfect but it is way too short (his back length is 11″) so I will be sizing up. I did my own (very scientific of course) waterproof testing. Water beaded up and ran off when I ran the coat under a stream of water. I then bunched up the coat like a little jacket “bowl” and poured water in it. I checked the jacket after about ten minutes and the water was still in the “bowl” and the inner portion was completely dry.

10.  Blueberry Pet Windproof Waterproof Reflective Softshell Dog Jacket (not Hooded)

Key Features

  • Lightweight waterproof
  • Step-in style that zips up the front and a snap at collar
  • Fleece lined
  • Moderate to full belly coverage
  • Reflective piping
  • Several color choices
  • Leash hole
  • Elastic leg straps
  • Minimum chest girth 17″ and neck 13.5″
  • Coat weight 2.11 oz (10)

Cute raincoat that will keep your pup warm and dry in the rain. Many reviewers commented on how warm it kept their dog and the quality of material. The negative complaints focused on sizing discrepancies, some stating the jacket runs small while others stated it runs large.

11. Blueberry Pet Waterproof Dog Softshell Jacket (Hooded)

Key Features

  • Step-in style jacket
  • Velcro closure on belly side
  • Adjustable hood
  • Leash hole AND harness hole
  • Elastic leg bands
  • Fleece lined
  • Moderate belly coverage
  • Moderate front leg coverage
  • Minimum chest girth 15.75″
  • Jacket weight 2.11 oz (Size 10)

Blueberry Pet has been selling award-winning pet products and has won America’s Best Petcare Brands the last two years. Their collections are full of cute designs and prints, and even have owner and dog matching apparel if that’s your style! My Poodles are not big fans of the elastic leg bands so I usually don’t use them, but they do help to keep the jacket in place. I like the Velcro, it makes it easy to close and also take off.

Conclusion

Sometimes our little guys just need a lightweight raincoat or poncho because it’s rainy but not really cold. Too warm outside for a waterproof winter coat but wet enough to need protection. Rain jackets for small dogs are the perfect solution, adding a light layer so your pup doesn’t get soaked. Do you own one of these rain jackets I’ve listed? Do you have a favorite “go to” raincoat that you use for your dog? I’d love to hear from you!
